Pewter has been used in Scotland for centuries; first discovered by the Romans around 200 AD, it was once known as the ‘metal of kings’ because only royalty could afford it. This piece is made in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, by Pewtermill Crafts, a small family business founded by David Harkison in 1960, which produces fine pewter jewellery and giftware.

How to use a quaich

Traditionally the quaich is held in both hands by its ‘lugs’, a gesture of trust because neither hand can hold a weapon. At a Scottish wedding the couple share a dram from it as their first drink together, and it is passed around at gatherings, christenings and Burns Night. Clean it by hand with warm soapy water and dry it straight away.
